Freaky T's Question:

I’m in the early stages of changing from a male to a female body. I’m not interested in sex reassignment surgery. I want to be a woman, but love women in more ways than just friendship? Am I Lesbian? My friends say it’s impossible! I feel like a freak!

Dr Delicious' Answer:

 

Gender identity and sexual orientation are two different things and are often confused as “the same”. Gender identity is the sex you believe yourself to be, regardless of what body you were born into (or what’s in your pants...) On the other hand, sexual orientation describes the gender of the people you are attracted to both sexually and emotionally. Your sexual orientation can be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or straight. So yes, transsexuals can be homosexual, bisexual or heterosexual.

 

There are individuals that are specifically attracted to and prefer trans people as intimate partners. You will probably be happy to hear that although I don't think it's actually a sexual orientation, there are people who are specifically attracted to trans people.


HappyPap's (26) Question:

I’m 26 years old. My partner and I have been together now for 4 years. We use vibrators and dildo’s, but always protect them with condoms.  I have never had sex with a man.  Do I need to have a pap smear? I’m healthy and never go to the doctor.  I’m also too embarrassed to ask anyone. What do you suggest I do?

Dr Delicious' Answer:

A pap smear is a good idea even if your current partner is a woman and you’ve never had sexual intercourse with a man. Even if you are not sexually active at all, it is still a good idea to get a pap and pelvic exam every year. Lesbians are at risk for sexually transmitted infections, just as heterosexual women are. Sadly, many STIs do not show any symptoms. It is important to be honest with your health care provider, in order for them to have the best intervention and prescribe the right treatment. Be sure to go to a lesbian-friendly doctor or Primary Health Care Nurse.
